Week 29: ME & Food (Member Photos)
Sara Lowing-Wright - This week was perfectly timed as my garden tomatoes were just ready for picking. A tomato sandwich takes me back to my childhood. My mother and her sister, my Aunt Rosie, made these sandwiches for me while growing up. Garden fresh tomatoes are the only option when making a tomato sandwich, so you can only have them a couple short months out of the year. It's a simple recipe. Bread-soft and yummy.A thick layer of mayo-don't skimp. Tomatoes just picked from the vine-slightly warmed from the sun if possible.Kosher salt-sprinkled generously. The smell of the tomatoes as you are eating the sandwich is also part of the experience. You don't get that smell with store bought. Garden fresh, please. Enjoy. xo
Briar Marie - I grew up with a Mom that didn't cook (okay she'd slap me for that, but she didn't enjoy it) and a Dad that only grilled. It's hard to feel excited to learn something like cooking from level zero from those that felt zero excitement about it. When I left the house I ate ridiculous things like tuna on saltines or even popcorn for dinner sometimes. Seriously. When I got married, we had great jobs, a small townhouse, no kids, and we ate out a LOT. Frozen pizza and macaroni and cheese in between. I only knew how to cook 3 or 4 "real" meals. I didn't even grill. Then I had my first baby, I decided to stay home, and suddenly I felt like it was my job to learn SOMETHING about cooking. I threw out a random question on FB for recipes that people regularly make. Help me! And I got an amazing response. A huge range of skill levels and flavors and I approached it like an engineer. Dinner was an experiment. My new camera (that I had no idea how to use) helped me save the recipes I wanted to keep. I very nearly started a food blog after about 5 years. At that time I made at least one completely new meal every week. I wanted to cook more than I could possible eat. I was looking for places to send baked goods. I cook with as few processed foods as possible, not so much for health as for the amazing discovery that I can make those things myself! Who knew that ranch was so simple? Who knew granola only needs 4 ingredients? Who knew whipped cream is actually made by.... whipping up cream? My kitchen became this wonderful place of science and magic. Now I have hundreds of tried and true recipes in my arsenal so that I only adventure into the new when I have time or inspiration. It's a true joy to cook for my family now. My kitchen is my space. Cooking is "me" time.
Tausha Coates - This week I went to my mom's house, and she taught me how to bottle cherries. We used the old canning pot that my mom was given as a wedding gift. By working around the clock for an entire day, we were able to bottle over 100 pounds of cherries! This is by no means my niche, but I am learning!
Jen Ostler - Me and food...are sworn enemies. It's a long story but mostly it comes down to weight issues and confusion and maybe some hopelessness. Food makes me happy...and also it doesn't.
Jennifer L. Bruce - I don't love cooking, I don't care that much for strawberries unless they are made into something, but I do love chocolate!
Meghan Nesom - Me and food. Well actually, me, my sweet boy and my hubby with pizza on the beach. Who would complain about this dinner?
Emily Ingalls - I love food and eating! I always have. Every family gathering has been centered around food. If we gather, we eat! But my appreciation for good food and good for me food has always been there. I've generally been a healthy eater, but in the last few years, I've really changed my eating habits to reflect the healthier lifestyle I've grown into. And I've felt a lot better ever since. But when there is a can of ReddiWhip in the refrigerator, all bets are off! I've been eating it out of the can this way ever since I was a child, and I have no plans to stop as an adult! www.emilyingallsphotography.com
Adriana Meixner - I'm generally a healthy person although I do indulge from time to time...and when I do pizza seems to be my 'go to'. Here I am having a slice of pizza with a smile on my face, of course! www.adrianameixner.com
